Painting - Natural and Man-Made Disasters
Scheme: Paintings inspired by natural and man-made disasters that have affected animals and humans in some way
Fifth year students
The surrealist paintings were inspired by natural and man-made disasters that have affected animals and humans in some way. The paintings were created using acrylic paint which was applied to board. The boards were sanded and primed before the acrylic paint was applied. Pupils’ based their ideas around topics such as nuclear disasters, primarily Fukushima, climate change, the extinction of Woolly Mammoths, Pollution, Tsunamis and Earthquakes. They watched YouTube video clips and were given a limited amount of information regarding certain disasters but were encouraged to research topics of interest independently. Preliminary work consisted of collage creations inspired by artists Sarah Eisenlohr, Moki Mioki and Gavin Lavelle. Some students opted to create hand-made collages where as others created theirs using digital technologies such as Photoshop. Some pupils worked directly from their collages where as others chose elements and constructed imaginary compositions while creating their Painting. The students completed the project within a duration of 4 weeks.
